FAQs
How do I receive an application fee waiver?
Application waivers are available in some instances. For the 2023-2024 application season, the only programs requiring an application fee are: Computer Science, Engineering, and MALS. To request a fee waiver please contact the prospective program for more details.
Do all programs require GRE scores in 2023-2024?
The only program requiring GRE scores this year is Computer Science. For all other programs the GRE is optional.
Can I receive a English Language Proficiency waiver?
The language proficiency test can be waived if you are earning or have earned a degree from institutions in the United States, Canada, or from an English-speaking country. Applicants whose language of instruction at their non-US university was 100% taught in English are also not required to report scores. *Some Guarini programs have stricter requirements. Please visit the program websites for more details.
***You do not need to seek our approval or submit documentation to prove eligibility for this waiver. You should indicate eligibility with the check box in the education section of your application.
Which English Language Proficiency exams are accepted?
We accept Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo (DET). We will accept self-reported scores at the time of application. If admitted, you will be required to provide official test results.
Do I need to submit transcripts from every college or university I have attended?
You will be required to upload a copy of the academic transcript(s) issued by the institution(s) from which you obtained your undergraduate (bachelor's or first) degree; any advanced/graduate degrees; and any transfer institutions. If your transcript(s) are not in English, upload both the original transcript and a certified translation.
Do you convert GPAs?
We do not convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale, nor should you.
How many letters of recommendation may I submit?
You are required to have three letters of recommendation. You may include the information for up to four recommenders.
Who should I select to write my recommendation letters?
Request letters of recommendation from people who can speak to your academic abilities and likelihood to succeed in graduate school. Letters of recommendation from friends, family members, or coaches do not enhance your candidacy.
You are responsible for notifying your references of your application deadline and ensuring your recommendation letters are submitted on time. We review your application only if all required recommendation letters are received by your application deadline.
Can I update my application materials after submission?
No. All that can be updated after submission are unofficial self-reported test scores, permanent address, and recommender information. This can be done through your application status page.
If I apply early, can I receive my application decision early?
No, all decisions are released after the application deadline and after admissions committees have met and evaluated the applications.
Can my credentials be evaluated before I apply?
As faculty members take all components of an application into consideration it is not possible to make an assessment before an application has been submitted.
How can I check on the status of my recommendations/ edit recommenders?
This can be done by returning to your application status page. You can send email reminders to recommenders as well as update/add a recommender after application submission if needed.
How can I find out the status of my application?
We cannot provide updates as to where it is in the review process or provide an early decision. You can access your Status Page to monitor receipt of your LORs and if you do not hear from us regarding missing or late materials you can assume your application is complete. Our individual graduate programs review applications and make application decisions, so we are unable to provide status updates. You can reach out directly to the program in which you have applied for further questions about your status.
What address should official transcripts be sent to?
Upon admission into your program, official transcripts showing your conferred degree are required.
There is no need to send official transcripts unless you are offered admission.
Official transcripts should be sent to the Guarini School address.
Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies
Dartmouth College
64 College Street, Suite 6062, Room 102

INTERNATIONAL APPLICATION GUIDELINES
1. Does Dartmouth require specific high school courses?
ACADEMICS
An applicant is expected to have pursued the most demanding curriculum offered by the high school(s) attended. In schools that follow a US-based curriculum, five “major” subjects are required through the senior year. A student is admitted to Dartmouth College without a major designation but there are specific recommendations for students planning a course of study in STEM disciplines.
We recommend a course of study that includes a minimum of:
English: 4 years with a preference for writing-intensive literature courses
Mathematics: 4 years, through calculus for students interested in engineering and the STEM disciplines
History and social science: 3 years
Science: 3 years of laboratory science with 4 years including physics for students considering engineering
Foreign language: 3 years of a single language (ancient or modern) with 4 preferred
Eligibility Guidelines
Your past education level will determine whether you are eligible for first-year or transfer admission. Candidates for first-year admission may apply via Dartmouth’s Early Decision, Regular Decision or QuestBridge match processes. See the following eligibility guidelines for each process to determine which process is most appropriate for you.
Early Decision Eligibility
Early Decision applicants are considered for first-year admission and may apply to other colleges concurrent with their application to Dartmouth.
Early Decision applicants must agree to the following conditions: if admitted to Dartmouth, Early Decision applicants must withdraw any applications to other colleges, and may not initiate any new applications to other colleges; if admitted to Dartmouth and provided with sufficient financial aid, Early Decision applicants must enroll at Dartmouth – regardless of any concurrent offers the applicant may have received from other colleges.
Early Decision applicants are encouraged to review the eligibility information at other colleges they are considering to ensure that submitting an early application to Dartmouth does not conflict with another college’s application requirements.
Students who have not matriculated at a college are eligible for first-year admission.
Students who have taken college coursework that is counting towards their high school graduation must apply for first-year admission. This includes students pursuing an associate's degree while finishing high school.
Students who have completed high school and have matriculated at a college, even if they have attended for one term or less, must apply for transfer admission.
Students who are not currently enrolled in school, or whose education has been interrupted, may apply for admission and often use the "Additional Information" portion of the application to provide background on their experiences and their educational path.
Students who have previously earned a bachelor's degree or its equivalent are not eligible for admission to Dartmouth.
Regular Decision Eligibility
Regular Decision applicants are considered for first-year admission and may apply to other colleges concurrent with their application to Dartmouth.

If English is not my first language, am I required to submit a language proficiency test?
INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS
If your first language is not English and your secondary school curriculum has not been delivered in English for at least two years, we require you to submit an English proficiency exam score from the TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or Cambridge English exam.
In addition to the English Language Proficiency details above, we will accept online results from the TOEFL and IELTS examinations from applicants for the Class of 2028 in order to be more flexible for international applicants: TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition, TOEFL IPT Plus for China, IELTS Indicator. Dartmouth does not currently accept the MyBest score feature from TOEFL.
Dartmouth does not have minimum required scores on English proficiency exams; however, most successful applicants score above 100 on the TOEFL exam, above a 7 on IELTS, above a 130 on Duolingo, or above 185 on Cambridge English.
An InitialView interview is not required, but, if you have completed one, we encourage you to submit your results to Dartmouth.
Does it improve my chances if I demonstrate interest by visiting, calling, emailing, attending college fairs, or taking part in web events?
TIPS AND ADVICE
No. Your completed application is all the demonstrated interest we need.
We don’t track visits, communications, college fairs, or web events to enhance or detract from anyone’s application.
That said, we do think it is a good idea to develop a strong sense of whether or not Dartmouth is a good match for you. If you understand Dartmouth well, we believe you’ll be better prepared to articulate how you will benefit from and contribute to our unique community in your application for admission.
